Brexit Forum ‘must be established without delay’ – Ní Riada

22 September, 2016 - by Liadh Ní Riada MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada has said today that the vote to Remain in the North of Ireland cannot be misconstrued and the democratic wishes of the people must be respected and that Enda Kenny must stand up for the national interest and immediately establish the All-Ireland forum on Brexit.

The MEP for Ireland South said:

“The future on Ireland depends upon an open Irish border, free trade or replacing EU funding because all of that will be subject to negotiation with the other EU states. In the event of Brexit, none of this is assured.

“The only way to guarantee those things is for the north to stay within the EU. That is the position of the electorate of the north, that is the Sinn Fein position and it will remain our position

“I call on Taoiseach Enda Kenny to act in the interests of the entire island of Ireland. The long discussed forum on Brexit must be established without delay.

“And the forum must work collectively and substantively, this is not an exercise in spin or damage control. There is no quick-fix solution to this issue. All stakeholders must be drawn together so that we can best protect the interests of those we represent.

“The forum should be established to examine the implications of the British referendum and critically all options for defending the interests of Ireland and the Irish people by ensuring that the north remains part of the EU alongside the rest of Ireland.

“Sinn Féin and all other stakeholders will bring unique perspectives to those discussions, but we must all listen in an open and constructive manner to the views of others also. Brexit represents the greatest threat to the island of Ireland in recent history, north and south. We cannot sit idly by until the wave breaks and washes over Ireland before coming together and taking action.”
