Ireland’s corporate tax strategy now a liability – Carthy
Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy hosted an event today in the Dublin entitled ‘Tax justice, not tax havens’, featuring author and Tax Justice Network representative Nicholas Shaxson. Sinn Féin Finance Minister Máirtín Ó Muilleoir addressed the event along with Trinity Finance Professor Jim Stewart.
Representatives from Oxfam, Christian Aid, ATTAC Ireland, Trócaire, the Debt and Development Coalition Ireland, Action Aid, Comhlámh and others attended, taking part in a roundtable discussion.
Addressing the meeting, Matt Carthy said:
“It’s clear after the Apple case that what was once the central plank of the Irish state’s industrial strategy – attracting FDI through our corporate tax regime – could soon become a liability as we continue to build a reputation throughout the world as a state that facilitates massive tax avoidance by multinational corporations.
As pressure on this matter intensifies corporations are likely to seek to avoid being associated with any state with a poor reputation in the field of tax policy. We need to ensure that we do not find ourselves positioned on the wrong side of this debate."
