Sinn Féin calls for investment in School Transport in Budget 2017
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Education and Skills, Teachta Carol Nolan, has today called on the government to allocate additional funding to school transport services in Budget 2017.
The comments come after a meeting with Minister of State John Halligan on the issue this morning in Leinster House.
Teachta Nolan said:
“There has been a reduction of €13 million in expenditure on school transport between 2008 and 2014.
“Every year councillors and TDs are inundated with cases where students have been refused school transport.
“This year it appears that the situation has deteriorated further with pupils right across the country refused school transport for various reasons.
“Sinn Féin has consistently highlighted the issues surrounding the school transport system and have engaged constructively with the Minister of State on this issue.
“It is my firm belief that investment in the school transport system is required in order to develop a truly flexible system that delivers for students and their communities.
“I am calling on the government to provide a significant allocation to the school transport service in Budget 2017.”
