Suspected Loyalist Drug Dealer is former RUC Member

24 March, 2005

Lagan Valley Sinn Féin Representative Paul Butler has described the revelation that the suspected loyalist drug dealer who had assets totalling £5m frozen yesterday was a former RUC member 'as further irrefutable evidence of links between loyalist death squads and the British forces'.

Cllr. Butler said:

"Sinn Féin has been campaigning for decades on the issue of collusion between the various unionist death squads and members of the RUC. Time and again these links have resulted in the murder of innocent Catholics.

"The revelation which has now emerged is that the individual who had assets totalling almost £5m seized yesterday by a Belfast court is not only a prominent loyalist drug dealer linked to both the LVF and UVF but that he is also a former member of the RUC.

"This evidence presented in a court is further irrefutable evidence of links between loyalist death squads and the British forces. However the failure to secure a prosecution against this individual will only raise suspicions that he has enjoyed some sort of immunity due to his close connections to the PSNI." ENDS
