Ní Riada congratulates crew of the LE James Joyce on successful mission
Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada has today congratulated the captain and crew of the LE James Joyce on the completion of their humanitarian search and rescue mission in the Mediterranean. The Irish Naval Service vessel returns to port today.
Speaking from Cork this morning, Liadh Ní Riada said:
“I want to congratulate and thank the crew of LE James Joyce and the ship's captain Lieutenant Commander Neil Manning, have undertaken a three-month humanitarian search and rescue mission in the Mediterranean. Through their hard work, selfless service and seamanship, the crew of the LE James Joyce have saved the lives of almost 2,500 men, women and children.
“I want to also pay tribute to the support staff at Haulbowline and to the families of the crew who played their part in the success of this mission. Their loved ones who volunteered for this mission are a credit to them and a credit to the nation.
“Ireland has a proud tradition of humanitarian support in some of the most inhospitable and dangerous parts of the world. The crew of the LE James Joyce and all the personnel of the Irish Naval Service involved in this and previous missions continue this tradition.
“I am sure the crew will receive a heroes' welcome as they disembark at Haulbowline today, greeted by their loved ones.”
