Martin Kenny TD welcomes recruitment of library staff in Sligo
Sinn Féin TD for Sligo, Leitrim, West Cavan and South Donegal Martin Kenny has welcomed today’s decision by the department of local government to approve the recruitment of six library staff in Sligo.
Deputy Kenny said:
"It is thanks to the immense pressure from opposition TDs, councillors and the local community that Sligo library services have been saved. While I welcome this decision by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government, this does not solve the overall financial crisis in which Sligo Co Council finds itself.
"It is clear that the current financial plan for Sligo is not working and we cannot wait for the next crisis, whether it is more cuts to services or the lack of money for road maintenance. The people of Sligo pay the same taxes as the rest of the country and they deserve the same level of services as everyone else. They should not be held responsible for the legacy debt of their country council.
"Once again, I implore the minister to sit down with elected Sligo county councillors and review this plan to find a workable solution."
