Anderson calls for register of EU lobbyists
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has called for a mandatory register of all lobbyists working in the EU.
Ms Anderson said;
"Secretive lobbying undermines democracy and citizens’ trust in governments and the institutions of the EU.
"Research from Transparency International shows the influence lobbyists have in shaping laws across Europe and often this influence can be hidden.
"Powerful lobbies such as those connected to alcohol and tobacco have been able to push back restrictions on those industries time and time again.
"The current rules around lobbying are voluntary and, as such are weak and there is a risk that those with the most money and best connections can exercise undue influence.
"We need to see tighter rules, including the creation of a reliable register of lobbyists to see how many there are and how much money they spend.
"Such a register should apply to all EU institutions to ensure accountability and transparency."
