Minister Charlie Flanagan dodged major issues and blustered his way through a debate on Brexit and his approach to this extremely important issue is a cause for alarm, according to Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Speaking after tackling the Minister in the Seanad on the issue yesterday, the Galway West - South Mayo Senator said:

“I asked Minister Flanagan very specific questions in relation to the implications of Brexit for Irish citizens and he dodged most of them.

“I asked if his government supported the wish of the majority of citizens in the north to stay in the EU and he wouldn't clarify where the government stand. Equally, he had nothing to say about the wish of the Scottish people to stay in the EU either.

“He had nothing to say on the rights of Irish speakers in the north, nothing to say about the implications for Irish fishermen and nothing to say on ongoing cross border co-operation on healthcare and other issues.

“It's clear to me that the Dublin governments approach to Brexit is haphazard at best, in contrast to the wok being done by my colleague Martin McGuinness in highlighting the negative impact Brexit will have.

“I have little confidence in the government to defend the interests of all Irish people on the island of Ireland and I believe that they are comfortable with the Thatcherite approach that the Tory government are taking in relation to workers’ rights and an economic race to the bottom.

“To think that this will not have huge implications for workers’ rights and conditions in Ireland would be a huge mistake, but I believe that the government hear would welcome this as well.” ENDS

Ráiméas Flanagan maidir le BreatImeacht gan Dealramh – Ó Clochartaigh

D'éalaigh An tAire Charlie Flanagan ó na mórcheisteanna agus chuaigh sé tríd an díospóiracht a bhain le breatImeacht le baothchaint uaidh. Cúis imní a dhearcadh ar an ábhar tábhachtach seo dar leis an Seanadóir Trevor Ó Clochartaigh, seanadóir de chuid Shinn Féin do Ghaillimh Thiar Maigh Eo Theas.
Ag labhairt leis tar éis dó tabhairt faoin Aire sa Seanad ar an ábhar seo inné dúirt an Seanadói do Ghaillimh Thiar Maigh Eo Theas:

“Chuir mé ceisteanna sonracha ar an Aire Flanagan maidir leis na himpleachtaí a thitfidh ar shaoránaigh Éireannacha mar gheall ar BhreatImeacht agus sheachain sé iad ar fad.

“D'fhiafraigh mé de nach bhfuil an Rialtas 's aige ag tacú le toil thromlach mhuintir an tuaiscirt fanacht san Aontas Eorpach agus theip air aon soiléiriú a sholáthar.. Ar an gcaoi chéanna ní raibh tada le rá aige i dtaobh thoil mhuintir na hAlban fanacht san AE ach oiread.

“Ní raibh tada le rá aige maidir le cearta lucht labhartha na Gaeilge sa tuaiscirt, faic uaidh maidir leis na himpleachtai dár gcuid iascairí agus tada faoi compháirtíocht tras-teorann i gcúrsaí sláinte agus eile.

“Is léir dom go bhfuil cur chuige an Rialtais seo i leith BreatImeacht fánach go leor. Is mór idir seo agus an obair dhian atá idir láimhe ag mo chomhghleacaí Martin McGuinness ag iarraidh aird a tharraingt ar an dochar a d'fhéadfaí a dhéanamh mar gheall ar bhreatImeacht.

“Níl mórán muiníne agam as an Rialtas chun leas mhuintir na hÉireann ar fad a chosaint agus 'sé mo thuairim go luíonn an cur chuige Thatcher atá ag na Tóraithe i Londain go maith leo. Tá siad ar aon fhocal maidr le le cearta an lucht oibre agus cúrsaí geilleagair a bheith chun tosaigh ar chuile rud eile.

“Tuairim lochtach é nach mbeidh droch thionchar aige seo uilig ar chearta agus coinníollacha oibrithe in Éirinn ach creidim go gcuirfidh an Rialtas anseo fáilte roimh a leithéid de chearta agus coinníollacha seo a bheith lagaithe.”
