Reversal of Poland’s plans for abortion ban inspirational for Repeal campaign - Lynn Boylan MEP

6 October, 2016 - by Lynn Boylan MEP

Reacting to the news today that the Polish parliament has voted down the ruling party's original plans to bring in a near-total ban on abortion in the country, Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan said:

"Today’s announcement is a fantastic win for the rights of women in Poland and inspirational for other protest movements across Europe, including our own Repeal the 8th in Ireland.

"On Monday this week, in opposition to the government’s proposals for a total ban on abortion, thousands of Polish women went on strike in cities all over the country, making headlines across the world.

"Less than two days later these same protests are being said by a government minister to have taught the ruling party humility and caused them to think again. Today's vote is a nail in the coffin for these archaic actions.

"Collective action such as these protests can and do have results. It is a clear demonstration that mass movements, such as Repeal the 8th, can make a huge difference to political discourse and government actions.

"The question now is, if one of the most radically right-wing governments in Europe can accept the opinions of women on this issue, what are you waiting for Enda?"
