Government has failed to deliver Programme for Government Commitment on Lone Parents – Carol Nolan TD
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Education and Skills, Teachta Carol Nolan, has today criticised the Minister for Education for failing to deliver on a Programme for Government commitment to publish a review of the barriers to education for lone parents before budget 2017.
Teachta Nolan raised this matter with An Taoiseach on the floor of the Dáil this week.
Teachta Nolan said:
“It has been confirmed to my office by Department of Education Officials that the Review on the Barriers to Education for Lone Parents will not be published in advance of Tuesday’s Budget.
“Sinn Féin has consistently pointed out that changes to the one parent family payment introduced by the previous Fine Gael led administration, will have serious consequences for one parent families, who are consistently at the highest risk of poverty in this state.
“The simple fact is that these changes should never have been introduced in the first place without a comprehensive analysis of the effects on one parent families.
“It is becoming increasingly clear that the over-riding objective was to achieve savings rather than ensure that one parent families were adequately supported.
“The fact that the Government’s belated commitment to undertake a review of aspects of the policy before Budget 2017 has not been delivered, is likely to mean that many one parent families will have to wait at least another year for action on this issue.”
