Anderson plays tribute to role of carers

10 October, 2016 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Fein MEP Martina Anderson has paid tribute to the role carers play in our society.

Speaking at the launch of a carers summit in the Guildhall in Derry this morning, Ms Anderson said;

"Thankfully for those who have a family member who has a disability or Alzheimer’s there are support systems in place which help us to cope.

"As someone who needs you and your services I know at first-hand how much families deeply appreciate the work you do.

"As a daughter of a 91-year-old mother with Alzheimer's I know the great work carers do and the vital support they provide.

"They are a life line in many a household.

"Carers walked into my home in uniforms and they helped us as a family.

"Being a daughter and carer influences some of my political activism.  I am vice chair of the disability intergroup group in the European Parliament and I will be holding a European disability conference next month about the impact of BREXIT on carers who are protected under European legislation.

"The British government must recognise the Remain vote of the people of the North of Ireland."
