Democratic wishes of North must be respected - Murphy
Sinn Féin MLA Conor Murphy has said tonight’s cross party vote in the Assembly to support continued membership of the European Single Market is yet another reminder to the British Government that they need to sit up listen to the democratic wishes of the people in the North.
Conor Murphy said:
“In June 56% of the people of the North voted to remain in the EU. Tonight we have the majority of MLAs voting to remain in the European Single Market. The people have spoken, their elected representatives have spoken, yet the British government continue in the opposite direction as if democracy means nothing.
“It would appear we have learnt Brexit means denial of democratic rights, Brexit means the ignoring of MLAs' mandates and Brexit means hardship for border communities on both sides of the border.
Concluding Conor Murphy said:
“The Irish government therefore must ensure they listen to the democratically expressed wishes of the people and their elected representatives in the North.
"The Irish government are ideally placed to hold the British government to account in any upcoming negotiations with EU member states. They must act decisively in the national interest."
