Teip iomlán ar Fhine Gael agus Fhianna Fáil an Ghaeilge a chosaint - Peadar Tóibín TD

11 October, 2016

Cháin ulabharaí Shinn Féin  ar an Ghaeilge, an Teachta Peadar Tóibín, an rialtas agus Fianna Fáil maraon, de bharr na gciorraithe tubaisteacha a fógraíodh inniu sa cháinaisnéis.

Dúirt an Teachta Tóibín:

“In ainneoin go raibh thart ar bhilliúin euro sa bhreis ag an rialtas i mbliana le caitheamh, tá sé deacair a chreidiúint go bhfuil buiséid na Gaeilge gearrtha siar chomh mór sin. Beidh laghdú 9% ar mhaoiniú Gaeilge, Gaeltachta agus na n-oileáin agus laghdú €6 milliúin ar a maoiniú caipitil.

“Tá díomá orainn de bharr na heaspa éifeachta atá léirithe ag an tAire Sóisearach Séan Kyne agus Eamon Ó Cuív. Ní rabhadar in ann éileamh Chonradh na Gaeilge a bhaint amach. Níor thugadar aon airgead breise d’Fhoras na Gaeilge.

“Tá an rialtas ag iarradh seift a imirt orainn.  Ná déanaimis dearmad gur baineadh 89% de chiste caipitil na Gaeilge, an Ghaeltacht agus na n-Oileán ón bhliain 2008 – 2014. Tá an-chuid le déanamh ag an rialtas leis an damáiste seo a chur ina cheart.

“In ainneoin chonradh soláthar agus muinín idir an rialtas agus Fianna Fáil is í An Roinn Ealaíon, Oidhreachta, Gnóthaí Réigiúnacha, Tuaithe agus Gaeltachta an dara dream is mó a ndearnadh ciorrú uirthi.

“Is léir gur theip ar Fhianna Fháil an gealltanas i gclár an Rialtais le hinfheistíocht breise a dhéanamh sa Ghaeilge a bhaint amach.

“Níl an rialtas dáiríre faoin nGaeilge a chothú – dar leo is caitheamh aimsire í seachas gné rí-thábhachtach dár saol.”

Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have completely failed to protect the Irish language – Peadar Tóibín TD

Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on the Irish Language, Peadar Tóíbín TD, has criticised both the government and Fianna Fáil because of the terrible budget cuts announced today.

Teachta Tóibín said:

“Given the government had more than one billion euro to spend this year, it’s hard to believe that the budget for the Irish language has been cut back to the extent that it has. There will be a reduction of 9% on funding for the Irish language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands. Capital funding has been reduced by €6 million.

“We are disappointed with the dismal impact that Junior Minister for Irish Seán Kyne and Fianna Fáil spokesperson for Irish Eamon Ó Cuiv  have had in protecting the language. They weren’t able to meet the demands of Conradh na Gaeilge. No additional money was given to Foras na Gaeilge.

“The government is trying to play a trick on us. Let’s not forget that between the year 2008-2014, 89% was taken from the capital budget of Irish, the Gaeltacht and the Islands. The government has much to do to try and undo this damage.

“Despite the supply and confidence agreement between the government and Fianna Fáil, the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs has suffered the second biggest cut out of any department.

“It’s clear that there has been a failure by Fianna Fáil to ensure the delivery of the additional investment in the Irish language that was promised in the Programme for Government.

“The government is not serious about protecting the Irish language – they perceive Irish as being a mere hobby rather than an important aspect of our lives.”
