Shane Ross asleep at the wheel during Budget 2017 negotiations – Munster
Sinn Féin Spokesperson for Transport, Tourism and Sport Imelda Munster TD has today criticised Minister for Sport Shane Ross on his failure to provide funding for new infrastructural projects, despite years of neglect and a dire need for improvements in Ireland’s infrastructure network.
Deputy Munster said:
“Minister Ross has shown no vision, no forward-planning and no initiative in this Budget. Given how outspoken he has been as an opposition TD, I had expected him to fight for his portfolio during Budget negotiations. Transport has been severely neglected since the recession, and if we are planning for a recovery outside of Dublin we urgently need to improve our road network. Minister Ross was outplayed by Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, and the result is disastrous for all of us.
“Sinn Féin’s Alternative Planning provided €20million for cross border infrastructural projects. The government’s budget hasn’t even provided funding for new projects within the state, never mind planning for our future by getting important projects like the A5 and Narrow Water Bridge off the ground.
“The lack of funding for the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport will have a knock-on effect on tourism. We need more than marketing to ensure that our tourism industry continues to grow, and without decent roads this simply cannot happen. Minister Ross is going to have to pull his socks up.”
