Mary Lou McDonald MEP calls on people of Dublin to support rights of asylum seekers
Sinn Féin National Chairperson and MEP for Dublin Mary Lou McDonald will attend a rally in Dublin City Centre at lunchtime in opposition to the Government policy of deporting asylum seekers. Today's rally has been organized by Residents Against Racism.
Speaking before the event Ms McDonald said:
"Sinn Féin is utterly opposed to the deportations policy employed by this government in recent weeks. This government has reached new lows in its lack of compassion and cowardly approach to some of the most vulnerable people in Ireland.
Whilst the recent return of Leaving Cert student Olunkunle Eluhanla is to be welcomed, many other people were deported in the past fortnight who should also be allowed to return and have their cases reviewed on humanitarian and compassionate grounds. We need a full investigation and report on the human rights implications of this policy by the Human Rights Commission.
"I am calling upon the good people of Dublin to stand with asylum seekers and against the Celtic Tiger selfishness of this Fianna Fail/Progressive Democrat Government" ENDS
