Negotiation on the legacy of the past needed now - Hazzard

17 October, 2016 - by Chris Hazzard

Sinn Féin MLA Chris Hazzard has said the British government needs to begin an intense negotiation to deal with the legacy of the past.

Speaking after meeting British Secretary of State James Brokenshire, the South Down MLA said;

"I met today with British Secretary of State James Brokenshire to press him on the British government's clear responsibility to address the legacy of the past and its failure to do so to date.

"In particular I challenged James Brokenshire over the disgraceful comments of his predecessor, Theresa Villiers, ahead of the publication of the report into the collusion in the Loughinisland massacre and her subsequent refusal to withdraw those remarks.

"In order to effectively deal with the legacy of the past we need an intense negotiation to move forward on the outstanding issues around the past and the legacy of the conflict.

"Now, almost one year on from the Fresh Start Agreement, we need to see clear evidence from the British government that it is serious about addressing the legacy of the past."
