Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil should be ashamed of their attitude to Irish language – Adams

17 October, 2016 - by Gerry Adams TD

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD has today said Fianna Fáil should be ashamed of the cuts in Budget 2017 to funding for the Irish language, which has seen a €6 million reduction in capital funds provided by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs next year.

Teachta Adams said:

“Fianna Fáil made a song-and-dance about their budget priorities being laid out in their Confidence and Supply Arrangement for a Fine Gael-Led Government, which calls clearly for increased investment in the Irish language, as well as the Programme for Government which commits to increased investment in the language.

“Despite such lofty rhetoric, Budget 2017 contains a shocking 9% reduction in funding for the Irish language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands, and despite the much hyped-up talk about protecting rural Ireland in the aftermath of the election, the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs has suffered the second biggest cut out of any department.

“In Sinn Féin’s Alternative Budget, we proposed a package of €14 million in investment in the Irish language. Included in our proposals was the provision of €5 million in additional capital funding for Udarás na Gaeltachta, almost €8 million in additional funding for Foras na Gaeilge and €1.5million in funding for language planning.

“With their budgetary choices, Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have refused provide funding for the investment plan put forward by eighty Irish-language and Gaeltacht groups that would create over 1,175 jobs, enhance use of the language and improve access for Irish speakers.

“It’s clear that neither party is serious about protecting and promoting the Irish language; they perceive Irish as being a burden on the taxpayer, rather than a vital and integral part of our national identity and culture to be protected, promoted and enhanced. Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil should be ashamed of their attitude to the Irish language.”

Cúis náire do Fine Gael agus Fhianna Fáil na ciorruithe ar mhaoiniú don Ghaeilge i mBuiséad 2017 – Adams

Tá ráite ag Uachtarán Shinn Féin Gearóid Mac Ádhaim TD inniu, gur cúis náire do Fhianna Fáil na ciorruithe ar mhaoiniú don Ghaeilge i mBuiséad 2017; ciorruithe a fhágann go mbeidh laghdú €6 mhilliún ar mhaoiniú caipitil á sholáthar don Roinn Ealaíon, Oidhreachta, Gnóthaí Réigiúnacha agus Gaeltachta

Dúirt An Teachta Adams:

“Rinne Fianna Fáil scéal mór as a gcuid tosaíochtaí don Bhuiséad a bheith leagtha amach ina Chomhaontú Muiníne is Soláthair le haghaidh Rialtas Fhine Gael a bhfuil tiomantas ann do chistíocht bhreise don Ghaeilge, agus sa Chlár Rialtais ina bhfuil níos mó infheistíochta don teanga geallta go soiléir, sonrach.

“In aineoinn na baothchainte seo uilig, tá laghdú 9% ar mhaoiniú don Ghaeilge agus do na hOileáin, agus in in aineoinn an scéil mhóir a rinneadh as saol na tuaithe a chosaint i ndiaidh an toghchain, cuireadh an dara ciorrú is mó i bhfeidhm ar an Roinn Roinn Ealaíon, Oidhreachta, Gnóthaí Réigiúnacha agus Gaeltachta.

“I gCáinaisnéis Chomhroghnach Shinn Féin, mholamar pacáiste infheistíochta ar fiú €14 mhilliún don Ghaeilge. I measc na mbeartas atá againn tá €5 mhilliún breise do mhaoiniú caipitil Údarás na Gaeltachta, €8 mhilliún breise nach mór do mhaoiniú Fhoras na Gaeilge agus €1.5 mhilliún do phleanáil teanga.

“Is lena gcuid roghanna buiséid a thug Fianna Fail agus Fine Gael droim laimhe d'aon mhaoiniú a chur ar fáil don phlean infheistíochta a cuireadh chun tosaigh ag grúpaí Gaeilge is Gaeltachta a chruthóidh níos mó ná 1175 phost agus a chuirfeadh le húsáid na teanga agus a fheabhsódh rochtain do lucht labhartha na Gaeilge.

“Is léir dom nach bhfuil ceachtar den dá pháirtí dáiríre faoin Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn - féachann siad ar an nGaeilge mar ualach ar an cháiníocóir, seachas mar chuid lárnach dár bhféiniúlacht agus dár gcultúr ar cheart dúinn a chosaint, a chur chun cinn agus a chothú. Ba cheart do Fhianna Fáil agus Fine Gael náire a bheith orthu as a ndearcadh ar an Ghaeilge.”
