McCann welcomes redevelopment plan for Durham House flats
Sinn Féin MLA Fra McCann has welcomed the decision by Belfast City Council's planning committee to clear the way for the demolition and redevelopment of the notorious Durham House block of flats close to Belfast City Centre.
Mr McCann said:
"These flats became synonymous with anti-social activity. They have been a blight on the St Mary's Community for years with violent attacks, drug dealing and vandalism which left many residents in fear of their lives.
"I made several representations to Helm Housing Association on behalf of local residents and got a recent commitment that they would redevelop these flats.
"Sinn Fein had protested outside Helm about the serious problems in the flats and called on Helm to live up to its commitment on demolition and redevelopment. The decision in Belfast City Council tonight clears the way for that process to begin.
"I will be seeking an early meeting with Helm to ensure the transition is smooth and those living there are speedily rehoused."
