O’Brien questions appropriateness of Garda Commissioner trip to San Diego

20 October, 2016 - by Jonathan O'Brien TD

Speaking today, Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Deputy Jonathan O’Brien questioned whether it was appropriate that the Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan attends a conference in the US weeks before the Gardaí go on strike.

Deputy O’Brien said:

“I understand that the Garda Commissioner has made a previous commitment to attend an international police conference in San Diego. However, public confidence in the Gardaí we well as morale within the service is at an all-time low.

“Only yesterday, the Garda Inspectorate appeared before the Oireachtas Justice Committee saying that the culture within the Gardaí is the biggest barrier to making necessary reforms.

“We are weeks away from a Garda strike and there is no contingency plan put in place by the Commissioner or the Minister for Justice who has also travelled out of the state to attend a conference in France.

“I would question how appropriate this is given the pending strike action.

“It clearly shows how out of touch the Minister and the Commissioner are with what needs to be done to address these issues.”
