Repeal and enact - the Eight Amendment must go - Louise O'Reilly TD
Speaking in the Dáil this evening, Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson Louise O'Reilly TD called for the repeal of the Eight Amendment and argued for a referendum to be held on the matter.
She added that it is vital that legislation be enacted to to allow for terminations in cases of fatal foetal abnormalities, rape and incest.
Deputy O'Reilly said;
"Sinn Fein will campaign for the repeal of Eight Amendment and for legislation to be enacted to allow for terminations in cases of fatal foetal abnormalities, rape and incest.
"Reports, taskforces and groups have been commissioned to look into these issues;
"Recommendations have been published;
"But nearly every year without fail we see and hear of another tragic failure of our system to protect and support women.
"And that abject failure is, in part, down to the Eight Amendment.
"The democratic way to decide on this issue is through a referendum.
"We need repeal of the Eight Amendment and we need better maternity services. We must look at what it's like for women in Ireland today and to honestly examine what that says about us as a country.
"Women deserve support during pregnancy and after.
"They should have access to all supports and care necessary for their health. However, there must be recognition of the fact that in real-life situations where a woman's life is at risk, there is an expectation that interventions need to be made to save that woman where all else has failed.
"Similarly, real life and tragic circumstances happen that necessitate, where a woman chooses, to provide for the termination of pregnancy in the limited circumstances of rape, incest and fatal foetal abnormalities.
"Sinn Féin wants to see the question of the Eight of Amendment put to the people and we will campaign for its repeal."
