Homeless figures for Galway reflect lack of any real action – Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh
Speaking after the publication of the latest homeless figures for September, Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has stated that the figures for Galway reflect the lack of impact the Government spin on homelessness is having on the lives of those affected.
“The figure of homelessness in Galway is up by one case to 148 in September compared to August. This is very disappointing and is made worse by the refusal of the Government to face the reality that the crisis in the private rental sector and their refusal to act upon it is driving more and more households into homelessness.
"These figures were published late yesterday evening in the hope of avoiding scrutiny. This is a disappointing departure from the promised all-party approach to dealing with this ongoing national crisis.
“Twice this Government has opposed the Sinn Féin Rent Certainty Bill, once in the Seanad and once in the Dáil. These latest stark figures underline the fact that the Government can no longer simply do nothing. Sinn Féin will continue to offer workable solutions including quicker delivery of social housing and student accommodation and a solution to the private rental sector which at the moment is not working for anybody."
