Lynch welcomes moves to address gender pay

4 November, 2016 - by Seán Lynch

Sinn Féin MLA Seán Lynch has welcomed news that employers will now be legally bound to address the issue of gender pay.

The party's equality spokesperson said:

"The Employment Bill was brought before the Assembly towards the end of the last mandate.

"Sinn Féín tabled an amendment in relation to gender pay and disclosure of information which was accepted by the Assembly.

"The assembly will now bring forward Regulations, that will require employers to publish information showing whether any gender pay disparities exist between their employees. The objective is to reduce discrimination and inequality in the workplace.

"Where gender pay differences are identified, employers will be required to publish an action plan to eliminate them and provide a copy of the action plan to employees and any recognised trade union.

"News that employers are now bound by law to address the issue of gender pay is particularly welcome, and this is a first step in helping to address discrimination and inequality issues in the workplace."
