McMullan surprised by lack of engagement on submarine incident
Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has said he is surprised the agriculture minister had no input into the investigation into an incident where a British submarine almost sank a trawler.
Mr McMullan said;
"I asked the Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs to outline what discussions her department had with the British Ministry of Defence investigation into an incident where an Ardglass trawler was almost sunk by a British submarine.
"I was very surprised by her response that her department had no discussions whatsoever about this incident since the British navy admitted its involvement in the near sinking of the trawler Karen.
"No doubt this will also be very concerning to those involved in our fishing industry here who are understandably very worried about their safety at sea as a result of submarine activity.
"The minister has a duty to act as an advocate for our fishing fleet and that should involve ensuring their safety when working at sea."
