Environmental Assessment Report should be a wakeup call – Brian Stanley TD

8 November, 2016 - by Brian Stanley TD

Speaking after a report launched today by the Environmental Protection Agency on the State of Ireland’s Environment, Sinn Féin spokesperson on Communications, Climate Action and Environment said the report highlighted a number of areas which need a renewed focus by the government.

“I welcome this detailed assessment on the State of Irelands Environment in 2016.

“It has highlighted the need for this government to focus on tackling issues of air quality, water pollution and climate action which pose not only environmental risks but also severe risks to human health and economic prosperity.”

“It is particularly shocking statistic that the poor air quality in our towns and cities are causing more than 1,200 premature deaths per year.”

“This is down to the increasing number of cars on our roads combined with the burning of solid fuels for heat and energy.”

“The report calls for a greater sense of urgency in reducing our dependence on fossil fuels for energy, heating and transport”

Despite optimistic statements coming from the Government, Ireland looks set to miss its renewable targets.”

“It is imperative that this government addresses this by fully implements the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Act during its term and by laying out a clear roadmap of how Ireland will reach its emission reduction targets from 2020 to 2050.”

“There is also the need to include sectoral targets in the Governments Climate Action Plan, which Sinn Féin had called to be included in the 2015 Act.

“This is not another matter which can be kicked down the road. The threats to our Environment, Public Health and economic prosperity are very real and need to be addressed now.”
