Micheál Martin has a brass neck on rents - Eoin Ó Broin TD

9 November, 2016 - by Eoin Ó Broin TD

Sinn Féin TD and party spokesperson on Housing Eoin Ó Broin TD has accused Micheál Martin of having a brass neck on the issue of rising rents.

Deputy Ó Broin said:

“Micheál Martin has again demonstrated today that there’s no end to the policy flip flops Fianna Fáil are capable of. His faux championing of struggling renters is Fianna Fáil cynicism at it’s very worst.

“Six months ago Micheál Martin voted against Sinn Féin’s rent certainty Bill in the Dáil and last month he instructed his senators to vote against it again when it was debated in the Seanád.

“Our Bill if passed would save struggling renters up top €2,000 per year. In justifying their opposition to our Bill Fianna Fáil said that it was pre-empting the government strategy for the private rented sector.  Yet today Michaél Martin is criticising the government for failing to action on spiralling rents.

"Micheal Martins crocodile tears will be of little comfort to renters who have seen the cost of their accommodation increase by 20% over the last two years.

"Notwithstanding Micheál Martin’s cynical u turn on the issue, Sinn Féin will still welcome his party’s support when our Rent Certainty Bill returns to the floor of the Dáil."
