Have your say on the future of the Gearagh at Macroom Public Meeting – Liadh Ní Riada MEP

9 November, 2016 - by Liadh Ní Riada MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada will host a public meeting to hear the views and suggestions of the community on the future management of The Gearagh, an area of outstanding beauty and a unique and ecologically important site. The meeting will take place in the Castle Hotel in Macroom at 8pm on Thursday 17th November.

Speaking ahead of the meeting Liadh Ní Riada said:

“The Gearagh is a special area of conservation, a stunning public amenity and an area of immense importance for research and study. The ESB and other agencies are in the process of putting together a comprehensive management plan for the Gearagh, and I am determined that the opinions and suggestions of the wider community are heard as this plan is put together.

“In tandem with the conservation of the unique flora and fauna of the Gearagh, access to the Gearagh as a recreation site for the community must be maintained. I am also eager to explore the potential for the development of eco-tourism and a research presence, which would benefit the local economy and create jobs.

“I have called for a comprehensive management plan to be put in place. I welcome the movement by the Government and ESB on this, but I have been very clear in stating that the views and suggestions of the community must be heard. The management plan for the Gearagh must be wide-ranging, long term and imaginative. I welcome the thoughts of the community and encourage all those with an interest to attend this public meeting.”
