Lynn Boylan MEP calls on Minister Naughten to reject INM acquisition of Celtic Media
Speaking ahead of the expected decision on whether to approve the acquisition application from Independent News & Media to acquire Celtic Media, Sinn Féin MEP for Dublin Lynn Boylan has called on Minister for Communications, Denis Naughten TD, to show political backbone and reject the acquisition.
"If approval is given to the acquisition of Celtic Media, Denis O'Brien and INM would not only expand their newspaper portfolio by seven regional newspapers but they would also extend their geographical footprint by five counties.
"Two robust reports have highlighted that Ireland already has one of the most concentrated media ownership markets in any democracy.
"The 2014 media merger rules already exacerbated the situation by copper fastening Mr O'Brien's dominant position. Therefore, it is unthinkable that the Minister could allow this merger to go ahead.
"I am calling on Minister Naughten to do what is in the best interests of Irish democracy and to not only halt this merger but to establish a multi-disciplinary commission of inquiry on media plurality in Ireland without delay."
