Constitutional protection is necessary to safeguard our water- Eoin Ó Broin TD

9 November, 2016 - by Eoin Ó Broin TD

Speaking on the Bill moved this evening that seeks constitutional protection for our water Sinn Féin spokesperson on water Eoin Ó Broin TD has said that the Bill is “an expression of the hundreds of thousands of people who make up the Right 2 Water movement.”

Ó Broin said:

“This Bill is the latest in a series of political initiatives taken in this house by the 38 Right 2 Water TDs in response to the massive mobilisations in support of the Right to Water campaign the five sponsoring trade unions initiated a dialogue between the union, community and political pillars of the movement

"We believe that access to water is a human right. That water should not be subject to the profit motive or free market – that it must not be commodified. To ensure that everyone has access to the water they need for life water must be provided free at the point of use.  The single best way to ensure that water services remain in public ownership is to enshrine that public ownership in the Constitution.  If you believe that water should remain in public ownership then I urge you to support this Bill and let the people have their say on how best to protect what is one of the most important strategic natural resources is the state.”
