Adams comments on developments in Syria

15 November, 2016 - by Gerry Adams

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD has expressed grave concern at developments in Syria this morning and the resumption of the aerial bombing of Aleppo.

Teachta Adams said:

“I am gravely concerned at the resumption of aerial attacks by Syrian and Russian forces on residential areas of Aleppo this morning. Following the recent cessation of such attacks, this morning’s actions are utterly unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

“Sinn Féin stands in complete opposition to the continuation of the war in Syria and we hope that all sides urgently and meaningfully engage to establish a lasting ceasefire and an end to the war.

“There is an obligation on all sides to ensure that humanitarian corridors are open to allow civilians to safely leave the area and for humanitarian aid to safely enter.

“The Irish government must be a leader in assisting the humanitarian response in Syria and neighbouring countries, as well as providing a sanctuary to vulnerable and desperate refugees that are fleeing.”
