Sinn Féin spokesperson on Education Carol Nolan TD has outlined her support in allowing schools to assess applicants of Gaelscoileanna via interview to ensure that pupils with Irish are given priority.

Deputy Nolan was speaking following the debate surrounding the ‘Education Admissions Bill’ in the Dáil this week, which aims to prevent discrimination in school’s admissions policies in terms of gender, familial status, sexual orientation, and religion.

However, as was highlighted by Cearta Oideachais amongst others, this could potentially work against Irish language speakers seeking admission in Gaelscoileanna, which are often over-subscribed.

Deputy Nolan said:

“The Education Bill primarily deals with ending discrimination in admissions policies, which myself and Sinn Féin have given support to. We welcome the fact that statutory agencies will be given the power to designate a school place for a child when they have been refused and the setting up of an appeals process. We also welcome the fact that the bill specifically prohibits the use of fees and the seeking of contributions for enrolment or continued enrolment in a school.

“As such, we have supported this Bill onto committee stage. However, I am aware that there are serious concerns regarding the necessity of positive discrimination in favour of Irish speakers when it comes to schools admissions.

“As a Gaeilgeoir and former primary school principal, I am well aware of the need to give Irish language speakers every support, particularly those who are speaking Irish at home.  Sinn Féin have been very active in supporting the rights of Irish speakers and advancing the status of the language both within the Oireachtas and throughout the island.

“We will be supporting the amendments as put forward by the Cearta Oideachais group when the bill goes to committee and will continue to do everything in our power to ensure that Irish as a language is protected and strengthened.”

Caithfear tús áite sna Gaelscoileanna a thabhairt do Ghaeilgeoirí – An Teachta Carol Nolan

Léirigh urlabhraí oideachais Shinn Féin, An Teachta Carol Nolan, gur thacaigh sí le tús áite a thabhairt do Ghaelgeoirí faoi agallamh ag Gaelscoileanna maidir le hiontráil scoile.

Bhí an Teachta Nolan i mbun díospóireachta sa Dáil an tseachtain seo maidir leis an mBille Oideachais (Ligean Isteach i Scoileanna) atá ag iarradh críoch a chur le polsaithe iontrála leithchealacha ó thaobh inscne, stádus clainne, claonadh gnéásach agus reiligiún de.

Chuir an grúpa Cearta Oideachais, i measc daoine eile, chun solais, áfach, go raibh an-seans ann go n-oibreoidh an bhille seo i gcoinne cuspóiri lucht labhartha Gaeilge agus iad ag lorg iontrála I nGaelscoileanna, a mbíonn ró-éileamh orthu go minic.

Dúirt an Teachta Nolan:

“Téann an Bhille Oideachas i ngleic go príomha le stop a chuir le cleachtaí leithchealacha i bpolsaithe iontrála scoile – rud a dtacaíonn mé féin agus Sinn Féin leis. Cuirimid fáilte roimh áisíneachtaí reachtúla a mbeidh sé de chumhacht acu áit a thabhairt do pháiste má diultaítear dóibh áit a bhaint amach. Fáiltímíd freisin roimh bhunú proiséas achainíochta. Tacaímid freisin leis an cosc ar tháillí scoile nó deonachán á lorg ag scoileanna le daltaí a chur ar an rolla.

“Dá bharr sin táimid ag tabhairt tacaíochta don Bhille seo go dtí go dtéann sé ós chomhair an choiste. Is eol dom, áfach, go bhfuil cúis imní ann maidir leis an gá idirdhealú dearfach a dhéanamh I bhfábhar Gaelgeoirí maidir le iontráil scoile.

“Mar Ghaeilgeoir agus iar-phríomhoide bunscoile, tuigim go maith an gá atá ann chun thréan tacaíochta a thabhairt do Ghaeilgeoirí , go háirithe iad siúd atá ag labhairt na Gaeilge ina dteaglaigh féin. Tá Sinn Féin an-ghníomhach I gconaí maidir le cearta lucht labhartha na Gaeilge a thacú agus an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn laistigh den Oireachtas féin agus ar fud na tíre.

“Beidh Sinn Féin  ag tacú leis na leasuithe atá molta ag Cearta Oideachais nuair a bheidh an Bille ós comhair an choiste. Táimid tiomainta ó thaobh cosaint, caomhnú agus láidriú na Gaeilge mar theanga bheo.”
