Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has called for an urgent debate on the government’s plans to deal with the homelessness emergency between now and Christmas.

Speaking in the Seanad today the Galway West - South Mayo Senator said:

“It's lovely to see Christmas Markets popping up across the place and for thoughts to be turning to the festive season. But it is ironic that we are seeing an increasing number of people sleeping rough in the shadows of these markets.

“We see that regularly now in Galway in places such as Eyre Square, the Fairgreen, Shop Street, Salthill and many other areas. We also heard from COPE at a recent presentation at the County Galway Joint Policing Committee about the issues victims of domestic violence face when trying to find emergency accommodation and we have the ongoing situation of people being turfed out of private rented accommodation by opportunistic landlords.

“There will undoubtedly be many emergency cases in relation to homelessness between now and Christmas and I have called for an urgent debate on these issues with the government to find out what plans they have for dealing with those unfortunate individuals who find themselves in such an appalling situation at this time of year.

“We are all aware of the tragic cases of people like Jonathan Corrie who died on the street just yards away from Leinster House. It is incumbent on the government that similar deaths do not occur in other places across the country and to do that they must have a realistic plan to provide more emergency accommodation immediately.”

Gá le Díospóireacht ar Ghéarchéim Easpa Dídine i nGaillimh – Ó Clochartaigh

Tá Seanadóir Shinn Féin Trevor Ó Clochartaigh ag iarraidh go mbeidh díospóireacht ann ar na beartais atá ag an Rialtas i leith na géarchéime easpa dídine idir seo agus an Nollaig.

Ag labhairt dó sa Seanad an dúirt an Seanadóir ó Ghaillimh Thiar - Maigh Eo Theas:

“Is breá an rud é go bhfuil na margaí Nollag ag teacht ar an saol anois ar fud na háite agus go bhfuiltear ag smaoineamh ar an Nollaig taca an ama seo. Ach, tá sé iarónta go bhfeictear níos mó daoine ag codladh amuigh faoi scáth na margaí seo.

“Feictear an rdaharc seo go minic i nGaillimh anois in áiteanna ar nós An Fhaiche Mhór, Faiche an Aonaigh, Sráid na Siopaí agus Bóthar na Trá agus go leor áiteacha eile. Chualathas ó COPE, ag cur i láthair a tugadh le déanaí ag Comhchoiste Poilíneachta Chontae na Gaillimhe, faoi na constaiceanna a chuirtear roimh íospartaigh fóiréigean baile agus tá daoine á gcaitheamh amach as cóiríocht phríobháideach ar cíos ag tiarnaí talún seiftiúla.

“Gan amhras, beidh cásanna eigeandála i ndáil le heaspa dídine idir seo agus an Nollaig agus tá iarrtha agam ar an Rialtas díospóireacht a bheith ann go luath ar na cúrsaí seo chun fáil amach cé na pleananna éagsúla atá beartaithe ag an Rialtas chun dul i ngleic leis na fadbhbanna atá roimh na daoine sin atá i gcruachás mar seo ag an tráth seo den bhliain.

“Tá a fhios againn uilig maidir leis na cásanna tragóideacha cosúil le Jonathan Corrie a fuair bás os comhair Gheataí Theach Laighean. Tá dualgas ar an Rialtas a chinntiú nach dtarlóidh a leithéid arís in áiteanna eile ar fud na tíre agus caithfidh plean réadúil a bheith acu níos mó lóistíne éigeandála a chur ar fáil.”
