Adams calls for release of Ibrahim Halawa
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD today urged the Taoiseach in the Dáil to increase Irish government efforts to secure the release of Ibrahim Halawa.
Gerry Adams said:
“Ibrahim Halawa has been held in an Egyptian prison for the last three years. The family have courageously campaigned tirelessly for his release.
“Earlier this month, Ibrahim’s trial was delayed for the 16th time. Following that, the Taoiseach said that he would contact the Egyptian President El-Sisi.
“It has since emerged that the Egyptian President has on four occasions this year used Article 155 of the Egyptian constitution to free 859 prisoners. The most recent release involved 82 young prisoners.
“Ibrahim Halawa has now suffered three years in appalling conditions in an Egyptian prison. I have urged the Taoiseach to raise this issue directly with the Egyptian government and to seek the application of a pardon for Ibrahim Halawa under Article 155.”
