EU military intervention won’t bring peace to Syria - Anderson

24 November, 2016 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said military intervention from the EU will not help bring peace to Syria.

Ms Anderson said;

"There are already dozens of military actors operating in Syria. Syria is in the grips of a horrific civil war. It is being used as a stage for regional and international powers to fight proxy wars to advance their own selfish agenda.

"Russian, Syrian state, America, British, French and ISIS bombs are falling or being detonated across Syria. All bombs have the exact same effect: death, destruction and misery.

“This resolution called for the EU to take part in military intervention in Syria, including by using a no-fly zone.

"The only options the EU should be considering are those which facilitate meaningful peace discussions, ceasefires and to deal collectively with the humanitarian refugee crisis at its borders.”

"There is no military actor in Syria that has not caused untold harm to innocent Syrian civilians. Aleppo, Hama and Idlib remain in dire circumstances, in the depths of humanitarian crises, relentlessly bombed with civilian infrastructure obliterated."
