Repeal and Enact - Sinn Féin Submission to the Citizens’ Assembly
Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald today published her party’s submission to the Citizens’ Assembly on the Repeal of the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution.
Teachta McDonald said;
“Sinn Féin supports the right of a woman to seek, if she wishes, a termination of pregnancy where her life and mental health is at risk or in grave danger. We support the introduction of legislation, north and south, to allow for terminations in the cases of fatal foetal abnormalities, rape and incest. In the 26 Counties this will require the repeal of the 8th Amendment of the Constitution.
“We supported the introduction of the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act 2013, which restated the general prohibition on abortion in the south, while regulating access to lawful termination of pregnancy in circumstances where the life of the mother is at risk.
“Where a woman wishes to continue with the pregnancy she should be fully supported in that decision. We have also called for the introduction of an all-Ireland protocol on pre-natal diagnostic screening in pregnancy.
“Sinn Féin will run a campaign on the issue of Repeal the 8th in the 26 Counties under the theme “Repeal and enact – repeal the eighth amendment and enact legislation to allow for terminations in cases of fatal foetal abnormalities, rape and incest.”
