Scotland and the North should remain in the EU – Ó Donnghaile
Sinn Féin Seanadóir Niall Ó Donnghaile has welcomed support from the Scottish First Minister to have the Remain vote of the north respected.
Speaking after Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon addressed Seanad Éireann this morning, Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile said:
“I welcome the opportunity to hear directly from Príomh Mhinistearan na h-Alba Nicola Sturgeon today.
“Her commitment to and passion for the Scottish Nation and people were palpable. She outlined comprehensively the case for Scotland and the North of Ireland to remain in the Europe Union (EU) as voted for by the majority of people in both.
“It was heartening also to hear the broad levels of support from other Senators for First Minister Sturgeon’s desire not, just for Scotland to remain within the EU but also their expressed support for Scottish Independence.
“I hope and trust this same expression of support will be found in the Seanad, Dáil or Government when it comes to the North securing designated special status within the EU and the campaign for Irish reunification.
“Ireland and Scotland have deep rooted and binding connections which continue to bear fruit in the spheres of culture, linguistics, the arts, the economy, politics and the environment.
“The future aspirations of Scotland and indeed the future of Ireland is best served when it lies in the hands of our own people.”
