Medical School Project would add to potential of North West - Archibald

30 November, 2016 - by Caoimhe Archibald

Sinn Féín MLA Caoimhe Archibald welcomed the positive response from Health Minister Michelle O’Neill to the medical school project in the North-West

The East Derry MLA said:

“I welcome the fact that my party colleague Michelle O’Neill has said she is committed to working with Ulster University, the Department for the Economy and other departments to take the project forward.

"The Minister outlined there are challenges ahead in ensuring the feasibility of a medical school, recruiting academic staff and ensuring the regulatory framework of training programmes is in place but that she believes these challenges can be overcome.

“The North West is a region with huge potential which we are seeing through the developments currently taking place at Ulster University at Magee & Coleraine, North West & Northern Regional Colleges and the Innovation Centre, the medical school project would very much add to this.

“There has been huge investment in Altnagelvin over the past few years and the new radiotherapy unit as a cross border service is a major development.  This investment makes Altnagelvin a centre of excellence and therefore an ideal teaching location.

“The cross border nature of the new radiotherapy centre is something which should be used as a model for future service delivery.

“The health service across the island faces great challenges and we are too small an island not to be looking at how we can collaborate most effectively to deliver for all our people.”
