Gerry Adams TD meets with senior Cuban official in Havana
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD has met in Havana today with the Secretary for International Relations of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, José Ramón Balaguer Cabrera.
Speaking from Havana, Deputy Adams said;
"I was very pleased to have a positive engagement with José Ramón Balaguer Cabrera, Secretary for International Relations of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba in Havana.
"I expressed my condolences and solidarity and those of Sinn Féin on the passing of former President Fidel Castro. There is a deep sense of loss and mourning in Cuba on the death of Fidel, but there is also a deep commitment to continuing his efforts to build a stronger economy and to his internationalist approach.
"We discussed a range of global issues during the course of our meeting, including the consequences of the Brexit vote and the current political and economic situation in Ireland.
"I outlined my concern at the continued economic blockade of Cuba by the US administration and expressed the hope that relations between Cuba and the US would continue to improve in the future. I stressed Sinn Féin's support for the full lifting of the blockade and we both agreed to maintain dialogue and build on relations."
