Kearney raises parity of esteem for Irish identity in prisons with Justice Minister

2 December, 2016 - by Declan Kearney

Sinn Féin MLA Declan Kearney said parity of esteem for the Irish language and identity must be addressed in the North's prisons.

The Sinn Féin Justice spokesperson said;

"We are 18 years on from the Good Friday Agreement and it is now time parity of esteem for the Irish identity is respected not only in wider society but also within our prisons.

"It is clear to me that there is a denial of equality & parity of esteem towards the Irish language, culture and identity within Maghaberry prison. I have previously highlighted this issue.

"Prisoners' efforts to learn Irish are being frustrated and hampered, and there is an unacceptable lack of sensitivity, as well as disrespect for the Irish cultural identity.

“I raised this serious concern with the Justice Minister at a meeting of the Assembly's Justice Committee yesterday and I welcome news that she and senior officials have agreed to address the issue.

"I will continue to engage with the Justice Minister to ensure that progress  is made on this important parity of esteem issue."
