South Belfast UUP Decision Ensures 4 Way Contest

19 April, 2005

Commenting on the news that the Willowfield Branch of the UUP has disbanded and decided to support the DUP candidate in the forthcoming election, South Belfast Sinn Féin representative Alex Maskey said that while the news will come as no surprise to many it did mean that the constituency was now a real live four way contest.

Mr Maskey said:

"The news that this branch of the UUP has decided to support an anti-Agreement candidate will come as no surprise to those who have watched political developments in South Belfast over recent years.

" What it does underline is the reality that South Belfast is now a real live four way contest for the seat. At the Assembly elections I polled the highest number of first preference votes of any nationalist candidate in the field and the response we have had on the doorsteps has been very encouraging.

"Alisdair McDonnell has election after election promised to win this seat from the unionist party. Yet election after election he has failed to deliver. In light of this reality his claims this time around are being met with obvious scepticism in many areas of the constituency.

"The results of the Assembly poll clearly indicate that four candidates are in the shake up for this seat and at present nobody can call the result." ENDS
