Michelle Gildernew The Only Nationalist Who Can Win Fermanagh & South Tyrone

20 April, 2005

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams today visited the Fermanagh & South Tyrone constituency where he was canvassing alongside sitting MP Michelle Gildernew.

Speaking to reporters in Enniskillen Mr Adams said:

"Michelle Gildernew broke the unionist stranglehold over this constituency at the last election. She narrowly won this seat by 53 votes. Given the narrow margin of this victory the contest this time around will undoubtedly been keenly fought.

"The reality is that Michelle Gildernew as sitting MP is the only nationalist who can win this seat. This is a contest between Sinn Fein and the unionist parties for the seat. Nationalists and Republicans in Fermanagh and South Tyrone have to rally around Michelle's campaign in order to keep this seat in nationalist hands and prevent a return to the days when nationalists and republicans where misrepresented by a unionist MP.

"Fermanagh and South Tyrone is a real contest and our canvass teams have been out all across the constituency over the past number of weeks. We are getting a good response but we are taking nothing for granted and we will continue to work tirelessly for every vote in the run up to May 5th." ENDS
