McAleer welcomes public inquiry into goldmine proposal

12 December, 2016 - by Declan McAleer

Sinn Féin MLA Declan McAleer has welcomed the announcement from the Infrastructure Minister that a public inquiry will be held into a proposal for a gold mine in Tyrone.

The West Tyrone MLA said;

"The proposal for a goldmine in Greencastle has caused widespread concern in the local area.

"In order to address those concerns, last month I asked my party colleague and Infrastructure Minister Chris Hazzard to consider holding a public inquiry into this important issue.

"I welcome his announcement that he will now hold a public inquiry into this gold mine proposal.

"The proposal is only 1,200 meters from the local primary school and GAA ground and there is a real concern in the local area about the lack of public consultation in Greencastle village, which would have made it more accessible for local people.

"Hopefully this move by the minister will allow people to get answers to their questions and to voice their concerns."
