Thalidomide victims must be respected and compensated - Anderson
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson said today that Thalidomide victims must be respected and compensated.
Speaking ahead of a motion of support for Thalidomide victims in the European Parliament on Thursday, Ms Anderson said;
"Over 50 years after the thalidomide tragedy, in which a morning sickness medicine for pregnant women caused malformations in their babies, victims are still fighting for fair compensation in several EU countries.
“I have met many survivors of Thalidomide and I have been inspired by their story, reliance and courage.
“The ageing Thalidomide generation now require extra medical assistance and care, they fear their independence might be stripped from them.
“Sinn Féin will continue to support the survivors of Thalidomide. National governments and in particular the German government most take steps now to ensure appropriate compensation is allocated to victims.
“On Wednesday MEPs will discuss the state of play on EU measures to ensure all Thalidomide victims get fair support and compensation. A resolution will be voted on this Thursday.”
