McElduff welcomes progress on Irish language in courts
Sinn Féin MLA Barry McElduff has welcomed progress on having court cases heard in the Irish language.
Mr McElduff said;
"More and more people are living their lives every day through the medium of Irish and they should be supported in doing so. That includes accessing all aspects of the legal service in Irish.
"Unfortunately, a British act of parliament dating back to 1737 means that all court proceedings must be carried out in English.
"I welcome the fact that my party colleague and Finance Minister, Máirtín Ó Muilleoir, has met with representatives of the legal profession to discuss the use of Irish in courts.
"Sinn Féin is committed to ensuring the rights of Irish speakers are protected, both in terms of using the language in court, and also through an Irish Language Act."
