Lá breithe and solidarity to Ibrahim Halawa – Adams
Sinn Féin President and Louth TD Gerry Adams today extended birthday and solidarity greetings to Ibrahim Halawa whose birthday was yesterday.
The Sinn Féin leader raised this case with the Taoiseach this morning after yesterday’s postponement for the 17th time of his trial in Egypt.
Gerry Adams urged the Taoiseach to raise Ibrahim’s continued imprisonment at the EU council meeting later this week.
Teachta Adams said:
“Yesterday was Ibrahim Halawa’s 21st birthday and I think it would be appropriate if the Dáil sent him belated birthday solidarity greetings.
“Yesterday, we also again saw his trial postponed. This was the seventeenth time since his arrest over three years ago. Ibrahim Halawa has now spent 1,215 days in prison.
“The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz has written to Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el Sisi this week to express his concern about the case.
“The Taoiseach needs to seek the support of other EU Heads of State to ensure Ibrahim Halawa’s release.”
