Mitchel McLaughlin MLA Welcomes Amnesty International Support for Finucane Family Justice Quest
Sinn Féin candidate for Foyle, Mitchel McLaughlin MLA, welcomed the Amnesty International support for the Finucane Family s quest for truth concerning British security force collusion in the murder of Human Rights Lawyer Pat Finucane.
Speaking in Derry Mitchel McLaughlin said:
The new Inquiries Act 2005 is a desperate attempt by Britain to prevent scrutiny into aspects of its dirty war in Ireland and in particular its involvement in the murder of human rights lawyers such as Pat Finucane.
Amnesty International has confirmed this by stating that by proposing to hold an inquiry into the Finucane case under the Inquiries Act 2005, the UK government is trying to eliminate independent scrutiny of the actions of its agents. Any judge sitting on such an inquiry would be presiding over a sham concluded Amnesty while appealing for a boycott of any such inquiries.
I wholeheartedly support this position and note that it reflects Sinn F in s refusal to endorse present policing and justice structures that remain unaccountable and under British intelligence Agencies control. Sinn F in will continue to push for responsibility for policing and justice to be devolved to locally accountable representatives.ENDS
