Kelly backs Lord Chief Justice's call for British government to release legacy funds
Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly has said the British Secretary of State should release funds for legacy inquests immediately.
Mr Kelly was speaking after the Lord Chief Justice’s comments that the state has a legal obligation to ensure legacy inquests take place and that a failure to do so could frustrate the rule of law.
Mr Kelly said:
“The recent comments from the Lord Chief Justice once again highlights the fact that the British Secretary of State has the power to release the funds for legacy inquests.
“It is appalling that families, some of whom have been waiting 45 years, have not had their cases heard.
“It is time for the British government to stop hiding behind the DUP and vice versa.
“James Brokenshire should release the money now so that victims and survivors can have the long-waited inquest into the deaths of their loved ones.”
