International community should help transition to new Ireland - Kearney
Sinn Féin MLA Declan Kearney calls on the international community to help planning the transition to a new, agreed Ireland.
Speaking at a 'Party of the European Left' congress in Berlin, which included representatives from throughout Europe and Latin America, the Sinn Féin National Chairperson Declan Kearney said;
“Dramatic changes for politics and society have been brought about by the British state's decision to exit the EU.
“Brexit is entirely counter to Irish national interests. The North of Ireland voted to remain in the EU.
“The Brexit decision highlights again the contradiction and undemocratic nature of Ireland's partition.
“We are saying that it is essential to secure a special designated status for the North of Ireland within the EU, and in all-Ireland framework.
“Sinn Féin believes Ireland's place is in Europe, but that Europe needs to change. We need a Europe based upon equality and social solidarity.
“We are asking that the significant influence of the left in Europe and wider international community mobilises to assist us in planning the transition towards a new, agreed Ireland.”
