Statement from Martin McGuinness ahead of today's Assembly proceedings on the RHI debacle
Sinn Féin’s Martin McGuinness MLA has reiterated his call for Arlene Foster to stand aside to allow space for an independent investigation adding that Ms Foster's statement in the chamber does not have his authority or approval as deputy First Minister.
Speaking today Mr McGuinness said:
“The statement which Arlene Foster is scheduled to make to the Assembly today does not have my authority or approval as deputy First Minister. She is speaking in a personal capacity and not in her role as First Minister.
“I have already said that a full independent investigation needs to be held into the design, operation and abuse of the RHI scheme.
“There is no credibility in an Investigation established solely by the DUP or in the selective release of some documents by DUP departments.
“An independent investigation is the only way to establish the truth of what has occurred and to begin to restore public faith in the institutions. That investigation needs to take place urgently.
“We need to establish all the facts and we need to know who benefited from this failed scheme.
“The First Minister should stand aside to allow the investigation to take place in as conducive an atmosphere as possible.
“We also need to see urgent measures that will limit the damage of the scheme to the public purse.
“This is not about party politics. It is not an orange or green issue. It is about restoring the credibility of the power-sharing institutions and weeding out corruption and abuse.
“That is my focus and the focus of Sinn Féin.
“Our commitment is to making the institutions work for citizens. This has to be on the basis of transparency and equality and putting the people and their interests first.”
