New HIQA Maternity standards welcome, but resources needed – O’Reilly
Speaking after the launch of the new HIQA maternity standards, Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Louise O’Reilly TD said that these standards were welcome but are launched against the backdrop of a ballot for industrial action by nurses and midwives and impending legal action by doctors’ representatives.
The Dublin Fingal TD said:
“I welcome the publication of these standards, but without adequate staffing and resourcing maternity services will not improve. I have repeatedly raised the failure by the Minister to recruit and retain the 450 midwives necessary to ensure that our maternity services are properly staffed.
“The implementation of the maternity strategy should be a priority for the Government, but we still have no date for making the 20week anomaly scan available to all expectant mothers.
“These standards are launched against the backdrop of a ballot for industrial action by nurses and midwives and impending legal action by doctors’ representatives. Standards are welcome but without staffing and resources they cannot be met.”
