Arms find on Shankill raises serious questions

22 April, 2005

Sinn Féin MLA for North Belfast Gerry Kelly has today said that it is 'highly probable that the discovery of the weapons captured on the Shankill Road is part of the assignment smuggled in by the British agent Brian Nelson in 1988.'

Mr Kelly made his comments after an AK47 assault rifle and pistol were found in the possession of a Shankill Road man on Wednesday.

Speaking today Gerry Kelly said:

"Given the history of British collusion with loyalist death squads over the past 30 years, the find of an AK47 and Browning pistol raise a number of serious questions, particularly as to the forensic history of these weapons.

"It is highly probable that the discovery of the weapons captured on the Shankill Road is part of the assignment smuggled in by the British agent Brian Nelson in 1988. This is an ominous development and must be remembered that over 200 people were murdered by these weapons." ENDS
